The 2013-2014 National Pet Owner survey states that 68% of US households include a companion animal. In most homes, these companion animals are cherished members of the family. However, when there is violence in the home, it can also be directed at pets as well as household members. It’s estimated that 48–71% of battered women also have pets that have been abused or killed.
